The world's nuclear fleet in 1983

In 1983, 297 nuclear reactors were operating in 29 countries, 177.5 GWe net, with 183 under construction.

Compared with 1982, the operating fleet grew by 21 reactors. 24 reactors were connected to the grid that year, 19,868 MWe, mostly in France (4), Japan (3) and United Kingdom (3). 1 unit was permanently shut down, 102 MWe. Lithuania and the Philippines connected their first nuclear reactor in 1983. The countries with the most operating capacity were United States (63,105 MWe), France (24,157 MWe) and Japan (16,562 MWe).
