In 2008, 441 nuclear reactors were operating in 32 countries, 379.6 GWe net, with 41 under construction.

Compared with 2007, the operating fleet shrank by 4 reactors. No new reactor was connected to the grid that year. 4 units were permanently shut down, 1,257 MWe. The countries with the most operating capacity were United States (103,782 MWe), France (63,260 MWe) and Japan (47,635 MWe).
