In 1999, 439 nuclear reactors were operating in 32 countries, 357.9 GWe net, with 38 under construction. 2 of those units are not included in the net capacity because no net figure has been published for them.
The operating fleet was the same size as in 1998. 4 reactors were connected to the grid that year, 2,735 MWe, mostly in France (1), India (1) and Slovakia (1). 2 units were permanently shut down, 652 MWe. The countries with the most operating capacity were United States (103,782 MWe), France (57,270 MWe) and Japan (43,487 MWe).
