In 2006, 456 nuclear reactors were operating in 35 countries, 381 GWe net, with 28 under construction.

Compared with 2005, the operating fleet shrank by 5 reactors. 2 reactors were connected to the grid that year, 1,490 MWe: Tianwan 1-1 (China) and Tarapur 3 (India). 8 units were permanently shut down, 2,235 MWe. The countries with the most operating capacity were United States (103,810 MWe), France (63,308 MWe) and Japan (49,020 MWe).
