In 2004, 443 nuclear reactors were operating in 32 countries, 373 GWe net, with 29 under construction. 2 of those units are not included in the net capacity because no net figure has been published for them.
Compared with 2003, the operating fleet shrank by 4 reactors. 5 reactors were connected to the grid that year, 4,798 MWe, mostly in Ukraine (2), China (1) and Japan (1). 6 units were permanently shut down, 1,511 MWe. The countries with the most operating capacity were United States (103,782 MWe), France (63,260 MWe) and Japan (44,135 MWe).
