The world's nuclear databases

Almost all public data on the world's reactors passes through a handful of registries: three run by the IAEA — PRIS, the RRDB and INFCIS — and one independent one, Global Energy Monitor. Each covers a different slice.

The IAEA runs three databases that between them cover almost the whole life cycle of a reactor. PRIS (Power Reactor Information System) is the most cited: it records status, dates, capacity and load factor for every power reactor in the world. The IAEA keeps it current continuously and publishes two annual reference editions from it: RDS-2, "Nuclear Power Reactors in the World", the reference data for each unit, and OPEX, operating experience. Reactor Atlas cites the edition it uses, with attribution and the reading date.

The RRDB (Research Reactor Database) is the IAEA's equivalent for research and test reactors: type, thermal power, status and location for every facility. It does not cover power reactors.

INFCIS (the Integrated Nuclear Fuel Cycle Information System) is the IAEA's system for the rest of the cycle, and it gathers four registries: the nuclear fuel cycle facilities database (NFCFDB) — mining, conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication and reprocessing —, uranium and thorium deposits and occurrences (UTHDEPO), post-irradiation examination facilities (PIEDB) and a fuel cycle simulation system (NFCSS). Reactor Atlas does not use it as a source: its records are consulted through an interactive application, with no public data export, so the fuel-cycle layer is built from Wikipedia, Wikidata, the World Nuclear Association and each operator's own publications.

Global Energy Monitor is not part of the IAEA: it is an independent nonprofit that maps energy infrastructure of every kind across more than 200 countries and territories. Its Global Nuclear Power Tracker is, alongside the IAEA's PRIS and Wikipedia, one of the three core sources for Reactor Atlas's power-reactor layer, published under a CC BY 4.0 licence and updated by edition.
