ABWR

The advanced BWR: internal pumps in the vessel, no external recirculation loops, 1,350 MWe.

The ABWR was designed by GE, Hitachi and Toshiba in the 1980s. It removes the external recirculation piping with ten internal pumps mounted at the bottom of the vessel, which reduces penetrations and the risk of a loss of coolant. Control rod drives are fine-motion electric as well as hydraulic.

Kashiwazaki-Kariwa 6 and 7, in Japan, were the first to operate, in 1996 and 1997. Hamaoka 5 and Shika 2 followed. Lungmen in Taiwan was completed but never operated. It is the basis of the BWRX-300, GE-Hitachi's SMR under construction in Canada.
