Kalpakkam's PFBR

India's 500 MWe prototype with MOX fuel, starting up after twenty years of construction.

The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam is the second step of India's three-stage nuclear program: heavy water with natural uranium, fast reactors with plutonium, and finally thorium reactors. Construction began in 2004; fuel loading started in 2024 and first criticality was expected in 2025 or 2026.

With 500 MWe and mixed-oxide fuel, it will be the largest commercial fast reactor outside Russia once it runs at full power.
