Shidaowan's HTR-PM

The world's first commercial pebble-bed reactor, two modules and one 210 MWe turbine, operating since 2023.

The HTR-PM of Tsinghua and Huaneng at Shidaowan, Shandong, has two 250 MWt reactors feeding a single 210 MWe turbine. Each core holds about 420,000 graphite pebbles with TRISO fuel enriched to 8.5%, cooled by helium at 750 °C. It entered commercial operation in December 2023.

In 2024 it demonstrated that it can lose all forced cooling without damage, the definitive test of inherent safety. China is designing the six-module HTR-PM600 for industrial heat and desalination.
