How it works and why it matters
eVinci combines a solid core, TRISO fuel and heat pipes that move energy without pumps or a primary water circuit. Westinghouse presents it as a factory-assembled, transportable unit able to deliver electricity, district heating or process heat. The developer states a full-power operating interval of eight years or more before refuelling.
On 3 September 2026, an experimental assembly achieved zero-power criticality, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That test provides data to validate and refine the design; it is not a commercial reactor in operation, a design certification or a construction licence. In the United States, eVinci remains in NRC pre-application interactions; in Canada, its voluntary vendor design review is listed as on hold.
