It is the most powerful research reactor in Romania, of the 2 currently operating. It went critical 23 years after the first research reactor in Romania, VVR-S Bucharest (1957). It is one of 36 TRIGA reactors operating worldwide, spread across 17 countries. It is one of 65 research reactors in 20 countries that General Atomics designed or built.
