It is the most powerful research reactor in Libya, of the 2 currently operating. It was the first research reactor in Libya to go critical and is still operating 45 years later. It is one of 48 pool-type reactors operating worldwide, spread across 28 countries. Its declared uses include isotope production, teaching, training and activation analysis.
